‘The curriculum lies at the heart of education. It determines what learners will know and be able to go on to do by the time they have finished that stage of their education…schools have until Sept 2020 to fully implement the new curriculum focus.’

(Education inspection framework: overview of research, Ofsted January 2019).

This year’s conference considers the complexities of the curriculum, which lie at the heart of the new Education Inspection Framework (EIF) and how it sits alongside pedagogy, teaching strategies and assessment in meeting the needs of learners. As well as covering key elements in relation to the curriculum, leadership and management, and assessment, the conference also looks at mental health in the light of the proposed implementation of three new PSHE curricula subjects (mental health, health education and relationships) in schools from 2020.

Keynote speaker Professor Dominic Wyse
Dominic is Professor of Early Childhood and Primary Education at the University College London (UCL), Institute of Education (IOE), and Head of the Department of Learning and Leadership. The main focus of his research is curriculum and pedagogy with key areas of work focussed on his specialist interests in the teaching of writing, reading and creativity. Dominic’s recent major contribution is published in his book How Writing Works: From the Invention of the Alphabet to the Rise of Social Media (Cambridge University Press). He sets the scene for this conference looking at recent curriculum developments internationally, nationally and locally using the teaching of writing and creativity as a focus.
